Compostable and Barrier: Flo Presents the New Generation Bio-Capsule for Coffee
Flo is a group of companies specialized in the production of food packaging. The Headquarters in Parma Italy, where the capsule coffee division is active, it is the site that, for over 40 years, has been producing plastic cups for the vending sector. These technical containers are continually subjected to strict quality tests to guarantee a correct functionality inside the vending machines. The experience gained in thermoforming processing combined with the knowledge of the European roasters market, have constituted the driving force for a new ambitious project, the realization of the new generation single-serve coffee capsules.
In collaboration with Natureworks, Flo has industrialized the production process of a coffee capsule made of 100% pure PLA Ingeo, a technical biopolymer that gives the product excellent barrier properties and high compostability. The real challenge was to obtain a technically advanced compostable capsule, which, despite its natural propensity to disintegrate in composting conditions, guarantees excellent resistance to atmospheric oxygen, thus avoiding the use of secondary packaging to maintain intact the organoleptic qualities of coffee. The new Bio-capsule faces the market as a world novelty and an excellent Ecological alternative to the barrier caps made of traditional plastic.
