Food Serviceware: Product Developments to Zero Waste Models
Next-Gen Plastics: A case study examining the effectiveness of compostable plastics.
Agri Service has operated fully permitted compost facilities in California since 1995, processing over 1.5 million tons of yard trimmings, food discards and wood waste into high quality compost and mulch. As state regulations mandate removing organics from landfills, compost facilities are finding contamination levels that reduce the marketability of end products. This presentation will help define issues with contamination including the cost of contaminant removal. A study done at the El Corazon Compost Facility on the compostability of PLA products will also be presented.
About Mary Matava
Mary obtained her degree in Agronomy from Oregon State University in 1979. After moving to California, she started an agricultural consulting and laboratory business Agri Service. The laboratory afforded a unique opportunity to study the local soils and diversified Southern California crops. The lack of organic matter in these soil naturally led Mary to build and operate compost facilities to provide the amendments needed to turn arid soils into healthy soils that support healthy plant growth. Since 1995, Agri Service has diverted over 1.5 million tons from the landfill into soil amendments and mulch.
